Pet Tales
News from Alta Rancho Pet & Bird Hospital
 July 2009
reid head2 Dear Reid,
Greetings friends,
Summer is usually the most active season for pet lovers. We want help ensure your pet's safety and so we'll address some summer safety tips in this issue.  In addition, we'll look at a new deadly poison waiting in the least likely of places; chewing gum!
Many pets are suffering from allergies which may manifest as itchiness, ear infections, or smelly, greasy flakey skin.  For those of you wishing to have your pet tested for allergies we have a special savings for you in the coupon section below.

I'm excited to let you know that we will soon be updating our website to offer you online access to your pet's health history.  We will also be offering appointment requests, boarding reservation requests, drug refill requests as well as an online drug/food store for you.  Look for an e-mail from us with the details!

We are always trying to improve and grow our practice.  One way to do that is through positive reviews and recommendations from our happy clientele.   I'd like to solicit stories, testimonials and photos from you to post on this site as well as post reviews of our practice in online search engines.  Click here if you have a story to share and please post it on both our web site and the various search engines that are listed on this link.

Summer Summer Safety Tips
dog shades
Planting a garden, summer cleaning, fertilizing the lawn -- we all have lots of work to do with summer upon us. But pets also have health and safety needs this time of year that their owners should know about.
"I see it all the time in my clinic in the springtime. Animals get into fertilizers and pesticides, those used on a home or on a farm, and it makes the animals sick," says Dr. James Cook, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. "People need to be aware of these potential hazards. Along with better weather, the spring brings with it the use of a number of common lawn chemicals and the blooming of plants that can be hazardous to pets."
Here are the AVMA's top 10 spring hints for pet owners:
*Fleas and ticks
They can be tiny, little more than a pinhead in some instances, but they grow and spread quickly once they find a host. The preventative treatments that you may have discontinued in the winter should start early in the spring to keep your pet's coat, and your home, free of pests.

xylitolCan your pet chew them selves to death?
dentyneRecently, a new toxin has been afflicting our dog population from a source we never would have suspected, sugar free gum, candies, and foodstuffs containing the new sugar substitute, Xylitol.  Xylitol has an adverse affect on the dog's blood sugar, bringing it down very rapidly and causing severe hypoglycemia.  When there is not enough sugar in the blood, the brain can't function and the dog can become weak, wobbly, seizure and even go into a coma!   At higher doses, it may cause liver failure as well.  There is no known antidote for Xylitol, but frequently, pets can be saved if they are treated early and aggressively.
Bottom line, check the ingredients in your sugar free food and drinks, and stay away from xylitol if you have dogs in the house!

Dobie ain't doin right!dobie
Dobie, is a 5 year old  Labrador mix breed, who presented to us with a history of weakness, lack of appetite, vomiting and depression for 2 days.  On presentation, Dobie was very dull and minimally responsive.  His gums were very pale and tacky.  He had an accelerated heart rate and weak pulses.  His belly was tense and painful to palpation.
Our initial rule-outs included gastric dilatation (bloat), ruptured abdominal mass from the liver or spleen, some metabolic disease or toxin ingestion.  We developed a diagnostic plan which included blood chemistry profile and complete blood count, chest and abdomen radiographs.

MicrochipMicrochipping has rewards!

Recently, we have switched tmicrochipo a new provider for our microchip ID devices. Home Again has attached added benefits to their product which has prompted this move.  Like all microchips, Home Again's chip is inserted by us under the skin of your pet (generally in the neck region for dogs and cats) and gives your pet a permanent identification number which can be read on compatible scanners available at most veterinarians and animal shelters.

Home Again maintains a database of your pet's pertinent information which includes your address and contact information along with any medical conditions your pet may be suffering from.  If your pet is found and the chip number identified by the scanner, then you will be notified as soon as the agency contacts Home Again.

Home again offers three additional services which make this product superior to the other chips out there:
  • If you are enrolled in Home Again's program, you get free access to the 24 hour ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center   (1-888-426-4435).  Each call to this agency normally costs $60.00, but with Home Again enrollment, it is absolutely FREE!
  • If your pet is injured while it is lost, Home Again provides insurance through Pets First Healthcare for up to $3000.00 towards the treatment of these injuries (limitations apply).
  • Lost Pet Alert- If your pet is lost, you can notify Home Again and they will notify all of the local agencies and veterinarians for you.
Microchipping is an inexpensive way to help you keep your peace of mind.
