March 2009

reid head Dear Reid,
Greetings friends,
Spring is in the air, and we hope that you and your pets will have time to get out and enjoy one of the best seasons of the year.
National Pet Dental Month was a huge success as hundreds of pets came in to have their teeth evaluated and cleaned.
We know the economic news may be leading to people putting off veterinary services. However, in most cases, delaying treatment can allow the problem to progress, do more damage to  your pet and ultimately cost you more money.

To help you get a jump on tumors which may cause your pet a serious problem if left untreated,
we are offering the histopathology testing ($105.00 value) for free with all tumor removals until the end of April.  If there are lumps and bumps on your pet, which have been worrying you, now is the perfect time to have them attended to.

We are always trying to improve and grow our practice.  One way to do that is through positive reviews and recommendations from our happy clientele.   I'd like to solicit stories, testimonials and photos from you to post on this site as well as post reviews of our practice in online search engines.  Click here if you have a story to share and please post it on both our website and the various search engines that are listed on this link.

If you have a complaint, you can use the same form to send it directly to me, but I ask you to let me respond to it before you place it indelibly on the web.

Thank you for entrusting your pet's health care to us.

Sincerely,
Reid Shufer, D.V.M.

Mosquitoes on the rise from foreclosures, is your pet at risk?
mosquitoWith the rise in foreclosures in Southern California, the number of poorly managed pools with standing water is on the rise and with them, the population of mosquitoes is growing rapidly.  This coupled with the decent amount of rain we've had this month portends a mosquito filled spring and summer!
As you may know, mosquitoes carry the deadly heartworm disease as well as West Nile Virus.  For this reason, we highly recommend that all dogs be tested for heartworm disease and be placed on once-a-month preventative to protect them from getting infected by a mosquito.
Unfortunately, there is no vaccine or medicine to prevent West Nile disease in pets or in people! Therefore, you should do what you can to minimize any standing water on your property to minimize the breeding ground for the mosquitoes.  If you live near an abandoned home with a stagnant pool, contact the county health department and see if they can order the pool drained, or stock the pool with mosquito larvae eating fish.  Using mosquito repellent is a good idea as well when you go outside.

bark

This runaway smash hit musical earned "two paws up" from The Humane Society of the United States, Hollywood office.
BARK! is all about man's best friend and is told and sung from the dog's point of view. Howlingly funny, fast paced and sometimes poignant, BARK! is a joyful new American original musical with compelling performances by a stellar six member cast. If you love your dog, you will love BARK!

Bark is playing through 3-15 at the Grove theater in Upland.  Click here for details.

Case of the Month:
rhett
Rhett Butler is a 10 year old black lab who presented to us last week with a history of chronic cough with a 3 month duration.   He had been losing weight over the past 3 months as well.  The owners reported that he lives only in their yard and had not been to any other places where he could have been exposed to infectious dogs.
On presentation, Rhett looked thin and a bit depressed.  He was slow to respond to stimuli in the exam room.  On physical  examination, Rhett was pale and breathing rapidly, though shallowly throughout the exam.  He had a deep honking cough when his trachea (windpipe) was manipulated.  The lungs themselves sounded clear.  Listening to the heart, we could hear a murmur which had not been there 4 months ago when he was examined.  Murmurs occur when the blood in the heart is not flowing smoothly, usually due to leaky valves.

dogfactsFun Dog Facts:

  • Dogs only sweat from the bottoms of bulldogtheir feet, the only way they can discharge heat is by panting. Dogs and wolves yawn as a sign of contentment.
  • Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with the ears. Unfortunately, the likes of bulldogs and pitbulls only have 10, due to their breeding. Therefore, these dogs easily get misinterpreted by other dogs and often get into fights.
  • One of the worlds oldest breeds of dog is the Saluki. It is thought to have been developed in ancient Mesopotamia around 3000 B.C.
  • "Three dog night" (attributed to Australian Aborigines) came about because on especially cold nights these nomadic people needed three dogs (dingos, actually) to keep from freezing.
  • A dog's sense of smell is one of the keenest in nature. If a pot of stew was cooking on a stove, a human would smell the stew, while the dog could smell the beef, carrots, peas, potatoes, spices, and all the other individual ingredients in the stew. In fact, if you unfolded and laid out the delicate membranes from inside a dogs nose, the membranes would be larger than the dog itself.
  • Two dogs survived the sinking of Titanic, yes that's right, two DOGS survived. They escaped on early lifeboats carrying so few people that no one objected. Miss Margaret Hays of New York brought her Pomeranian with her in lifeboat No. 7, while Henry Sleeper Harper of the publishing family boarded boat No. 3 with his Pekinese, Sun Yat Sen.
  • Giving dogs chocolate could be fatal for them, because theobromine, an ingredient of chocolate, stimulates the central nervous system and cardiac muscle. About 1.1 kg of milk chocolate or just 146 g of cooking chocolate (which has more theobromine per gram) could kill a 22 kg dog.
