November 2008

reid head Dear Reid,

Greetings friends,
Autumn has finally arrived, and with it, some of the prettiest time of year to get outside and enjoy our area with your pets.  Thanksgiving is just a few days away and, despite the negative news about the economy, we certainly have plenty to be thankful for!  Good Health, good friends, great pets and a country with the strength and capability to overcome even the most strident  obstacles leave me feeling very optimistic at the moment.  I hope you share the same sentiments.

With the holidays upon us, I encourage you not to overindulge your pets (or yourselves for that matter). In particular, fatty gravy and turkey bones are a strict NO-NO.  If your pets get stressed out by the holiday crowd, call us in advance and perhaps we can suggest a sedative.

I invite you to visit our newly revamped website (www.altaranchopet.com).  It is much more user friendly and includes great photo galleries and a huge information library.
I've created an interactive Community Forum/Message board for our website, which will allow you to discuss various topics of interest to you surrounding pet health and pet care.  It should be a fun and productive way for us to interact.

We are always trying to improve and grow our practice.  One way to do that is through positive reviews and recommendations from our happy clientele.   I'd like to solicit stories, testimonials and photos from you to post on this site as well as post reviews of our practice in online search engines.  Click here if you have a story to share and please post it on both our website and the various search engines that are listed on this link.

If you have a complaint, you can use the same form to send it directly to me, but I ask you to let me respond to it before you place it indelibly on the web.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,
Reid Shufer, D.V.M.

Animal Planet at ARPH!
animal planetWe have recently joined with Animal Planet Television to enhance your experience in our reception area. We have installed a beautiful 42 inch plasma TV in the reception area which will display a unique combination of Animal Planet content interspersed with information about our practice, medical conditions and more.  This service should be up and running by the time you receive this newsletter.

We strive to minimize your waiting time in our reception area, but there are times when you may have to wait while we attend to other patient's needs. We're confident that the addition of Animal Planet TV will make your waiting time fly by and perhaps give you an opportunity to learn something you did not know.

Is your pet's belly looking bigger lately?
Could it be a splenic tumor.
ascitesFrequently older dogs are presented to us for evaluation for symptoms ranging from general weakness and malaise to sudden collapse.  Often, these symptoms may be related to tumors of the spleen.  When the dog presents, we frequently can feel a mass in the abdomen or the owners may have noticed the belly getting distended.  The weakness or collapse is usually related to tumors of this organ rupturing and the slow or fast loss of blood leads to the weakness.
Just last week we had two older Labradors present with just such symptoms.  One was crashing suddenly, while the other had a history of intermittent weakness. Click here to find out more about this disease..

A short while ago, one of our long standing clients, Susan DeAntonio; a fire investigator with the K-9 division of the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department shared her harrowing experience with her 13 year old Labrador, Gator.  Sue's quick thinking and background training kicked in and saved the day!  Bravo Sue, you are amazing!  Halloween contest a great success.
Bourkee This past Halloween, we decided to have some fun and ran a critter costume contest.  Although we got the word our at the last minute, we had a nice showing of the cutest pets in Alta Loma!   After much deliberation, first place was awarded to Bourkee, an AKC champion French Bulldog.  To see the other finalists,  click here.

We plan to repeat this contest next year, so start planning your costumes now!

Case of the Month:ginger
Lumpy and Bumpy
but still going strong!

Ginger is a 12 year old yellow lab who came to us to evaluate a growth on her rump, which had been growing steadily for the past 6 months.  In the last month, the owner noted another, smaller lump on her belly.  Beyond these bumps, the owner reported some difficulty getting up and down, but otherwise she was in good shape.

On presentation, Ginger was bright and alert, especially for an old girl.  The lump on her rump was about the size of a small melon!  It was firm to the touch, but not painful.   On her belly, we found one large mass the size of a peach, with multiple smaller masses running up and down the length of the abdomen.

Ginger had never been spayed and we found a small amount of discharge coming from her vagina.

Our differential diagnosis for the lumps on her abdomen included mammary gland tumors or metastasis from the primary rump tumor.
