Famous Lipizzan Stallion Joins Dr. Kathy's
Family!
As many of you may know, Dr. Henderson is a
avid equestrian. She has been practicing
dressage for years on her thoroughbred
gelding, Alibi. Her love for dressage was
heavily influenced by the Austrian "Spanish
Riding School" whose horse of choice it the
beautiful Lipizzan. For years Kathy has been
following the career of a famous Lipizzan
stallion; Favory IV Delta (Delta) from afar,
hoping that some day she might be able to
own him herself.
With the aide of the Internet, she was
recently able to track down the owner of
this beautiful horse. After a bit of
negotiations, she was able to persuade the
owners to sell him to her. A few weeks, and
a number of restless nights later, he
arrived at her barn. The picture above
barely does his regal appearance justice. He
is truly a magnificent horse! We all wish
her years of joy from his companionship
So if you see a little extra shine in
Kathy's eyes these days, you can understand
why.

Dear Reid,
Dear Friends, Pet Tales has had a
brief hiatus during the past couple of
months due to some well needed vacation
time for both myself and Dr. Henderson.
I had a chance to recharge in Hawaii and
then attended a family reunion in New
York. Meanwhile, Dr. Henderson made a
trip home to St. Louis and helped
friends celebrate a wedding in Phoenix.

Holiday Safety...
It's mostly common sense!
|
|
With Thanksgiving just a few
weeks away, I'd like to offer
some suggestions to help make
this, and the coming holidays a
safe celebration for you and
your pets. Most of the problems
we see associated with the
holidays revolve around food,
toxins, decorations and foreign
body ingestion. Using common
sense and basic precautions,
most of the holiday illnesses
can be prevented. The following
list contains the most common
issues you should be alert to:
Food
- Chocolate is toxic to
dogs and cats. The darker
the chocolate, the more
dangerous it is. The smaller
the pet the more toxic it
becomes
- Bones of any type should
not be given to pets!
- Rich foods containing
fats (gravy, mashed
potatoes, greasy meats,
cream etc) can cause
vomiting, diarrhea and/or
pancreatitis
- Onions and Raisins can
be toxic to dogs
- Onions and Avocados can
be toxic to birds
- Macadamia nuts are toxic
to dogs, causing paralysis
Toxins
- Lilies, Poinsettia and
Japanese Yew are toxic if
ingested
- Flocking on Holiday
trees can be toxic if
ingested
- Aspirin in tree water
(some people put it in
there) can be toxic
- Antifreeze is very toxic
in even small amounts to all
animals causing kidney
failure
Toxic Decorations:
- Tinsel and any
string-like decorations are
often ingested and can cut
through the intestine
- Electric lights threaten
electrocution and the bulbs
are often ingested
- Tree ornaments and their
hangers are often ingested
- Phosphorescent glow
sticks have toxic contents
Keep your pets away from the
items listed above and your
holidays should go smoothly!

Case of the Month:
Mona's mystery!
|
|
Mona is a 23 month old German
Shorthair Pointer, who presented
to us last month with a history
of vomiting, diarrhea and
inappetence for about a week.
The owners had recently changed
the diet and thought that might
be the cause of the problem.
On presentation, Mona was
depressed, lethargic and
dehydrated. She had no gross
physical abnormalities except
watery diarrhea on rectal
palpation.
Mona was tested for intestinal
parasites, and Parvo virus. Both
tests were negative. Radiographs
of the belly were taken and no
obvious foreign bodies were
found. Blood tests revealed mild
dehydration and some electrolyte
abnormalities and evidence of
pancreatitis
Mona was started on intravenous
fluids and anti nausea drugs and
antibiotis. She improved greatly
overnight and was discharged a
day later feeling good.
Three days later, Mona returned
with the same symtoms...
