New Antibiotic eliminates the need for at home administration!
ab 1634Pfizer Pharmaceuticals has recently introduced a new injectable antibiotic called Convenia (cefovecin), which allows us to treat many common infections with a single injection.  Not every infection will respond to Convenia but the antibiotic is excellent for treating  skin infections, urinary tract infections, feline abscesses, upper respiratory infections and more.
A single injection will last from 7 to 10 days in dogs and cats.  With this drug, clients can forget about the hassle of oral administration of the drug.  Your pet will get the right dose every day for the treatment period, thus ensuring the best possible outcome.
Convenia is a little more expensive than more conventional antibiotics, but the convenience of Convenia is unsurpassed.  If you have difficulty administering drugs to your pet, ask us if Convenia could help your pet.

stem Stem Cells Treat Chronic Arthritis!
rattlesnake We are hearing about stem cell therapy in the news all the time. Stem cells are cells which can become any other cell type in the body, given the right conditions.  The power of stem cell therapy, lies in the ability of stem cells to reproduce tissues which have been damaged by disease.  The applications for stem cell use are just coming to light in the scientific community and new discoveries are being made almost daily.
There has been quite a bit of controversy over using stem cells from embryos due to moral issues, however, scientists have found that stem cells can be created by existing tissue in the body, thus eliminating the need to harvest embryonic tissue and thus reducing the controversy.
One area in which stem cells have been proven useful, is to to help ailing, arthritic joints. Arthritis is inflammation of a joint. The process of inflammation causes destruction of the cartilage which allows the bones in the joint to glide smoothly over one and other.  Cartilage cells have a difficult time repairing themselves and with chronic inflammations, they may be destroyed all together. This leads to chronic pain and stiffness in the joint as the unlined bones grind on each other.

Case of the Month:Kathy Robbie
Robbie Eugene; the six million dollar dog!

It's been close to a year since we told you about Dr. Henderson's dog, Robbie Eugene and his bloody nose.  You may recall that after an extensive workup, we found out that Robbie was suffering from cancer of the nasal sinuses.  When we left off last year, Robbie had completed a course of radiation therapy to help his condition.  The radiation therapy went well, although Robbie did have some of the typical side effects of irritated skin in the radiation field along with hair loss in the affected area.  After a few weeks, his hair came back (albeit white instead of red) and the skin returned to normal.
During a scheduled recheck CT scan in the early part of this year, Robbie's nose and sinuses were shown to be free of disease, much to the relief of Dr. Henderson and all of us at ARPH.  When the radiologist reviewed the scan, however, he found an abnormal mass deep in the neck tissue of his right side.  The mass was about 2 x 6 inches right near the spinal column.  Of course we were worried that this might be spread of the tumor from the nasal cavity, although the location was not typical for the type of tumor we found in the nose.

Is your dog drinking like a fish?
Could it be Cushing's Syndrome?
dog faucetMany of our older dogs present to us with a history of excessive drinking and subsequent urination. Owners are alerted to this when they find the water bowl is constantly being emptied  or when the dog is having accidents in the house.  Heavy thirst and urination have many causes, including, (but not limited to) diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, kidney failure, urinary tract infections, infected uterus, cancer and many others.  One common cause is a disease called hyperadrenocorticism or Cushing's syndrome (after the human doctor who discovered it).  Cushing's syndrome is caused by an excess of cortisone being made in the adrenal glands of the body.  All mammals make cortisone and it is a very important hormone in the body.  It's main function is to help the body deal with stresses of many kinds.  In excess, cortisone causes changes in the kidneys which prevent the concentration of urine. This leads to excessive water loss from the body and subsequent heavy thirst to make up for the loss.
