We
attempt to desensitize pets diagnosed with allergies to help alleviate
the itchiness that comes as a result of the allergies.
The process of desensitization works by continually injecting
minute amounts of the offending allergens into the pet.
Over time the body becomes “used” to the allergens and reduces
its reaction to them.
It is important
to note that desensitization is a long-term project.
We know from experiments and experience that it takes at least 10 months
for this procedure to be successful. You should
be prepared to treat your pet for at least 2 years before calling the
trial a failure. Desensitization is also an ongoing
process. You need to continue the injections in
order to keep the allergies under control.
Throughout the process, we
will use appropriate drugs, diets, food additives, shampoos and
conditioners to keep your pet comfortable. As the
desensitization continues, we will hopefully be able to reduce or
eliminate the need for these therapies.
The serum that has been
produced specifically for your pet has a small potential to
cause an allergic reaction (hives, or swelling of the face and neck, or
in the worst case, vomiting, diarrhea and/or collapse).
Therefore, we give the first 5 injections here at the hospital.
We will administer the injections ever 4-6 days and ask you to
stay here with your pet for 15 minutes after the injection to make sure
that no adverse reaction occurs. During the last two
injections, we will instruct you how to give the injections at home.
The allergy serum must be
kept in the refrigerator, as it contains no preservatives.
If the serum looks cloudy, or there are any floating particles in
it, do not give the injection! The serum may have
become contaminated and must be disposed of.
·
If you have a problem during an injection (some goes on
the skin or floor) do not make a second injection.
Simply wait for the next scheduled injection and give the amount
specified in the table above.
·
It generally takes 6-7 weeks for the allergy kit to be
made. Please keep this in mind when reordering and give us plenty of
time to get the kit in before you need it.
·
Because each kit is specific to the individual
pet and can not be used for other animals, it will be necessary for you
to prepay (by credit card over the phone) for the kit before it is
ordered.
